Liza Miller is the main protagonist in the television series Younger, in which she is portrayed by Sutton Foster.
Liza is a 40-year-old (soon to be) divorced housewife from New Jersey who lies about her age in order to get a job in publishing. After the dissolution of her marriage to David Miller, Liza decides to move in with her best friend, Maggie Amato, in Brooklyn. She then tries to gain a job as an assistant in the publishing industry. After being out of the publishing business for 15 years to raise her daughter, Caitlin Miller, Liza finds it more difficult than she thought to get hired. This leads to her lying about her age as a 26 year old.
Throughout the series, Liza gets caught up in a love triangle between Josh, a 26-year-old tattoo artist from Brooklyn, and her boss, Charles Brooks. She also becomes close friends with Kelsey Peters, Lauren Heller and Diana Trout.
She appears in every episode of the TV series.
Background[]
Early Life[]
Liza worked at Random House for 3 years out of college. She started out as an assistant to a marketing VP before working her way up to Junior Editor at the age of 25. She claims that at the time she was one of the youngest people ever to make editor. It's presumed that shortly after, Liza became pregnant with her daughter, Caitlin, and quit her job to focus on raising her. Later on, her husband develops a gambling addiction and ends up leaving her for another woman.
Season 1[]
In the "Pilot" episode Liza is seen interviewing for a job in publishing. The two girls interviewing her are young and seem skeptical about Liza's age. When she offers to start as an assistant they tell her that is she is too overqualified but what they really mean is old. To add insult to injury, Liza is then seen driving back to her home in New Jersey where a real estate agent is giving a couple a tour of the house. Liza overhears the real estate agent and the couple talking about her impending divorce and the potential foreclosure of her house if it doesn't sell soon. Later that night, Liza and her best friend, Maggie Amato, are seen out at a bar having a couple of drinks when Liza is approached by Josh as she's trying to flag down the bartender with her shoe. Josh mistakes Liza for a 26-year-old and Liza goes with it as she's flattered. They flirt and exchange numbers and later that night Maggie comes up with the idea that Liza should fake her age to get a job. She lands a job at Empirical Press after her interview with Diana Trout and her first assignment is to create a Twitter account for Jane Austen.
On her first day at Empirical, Liza runs into Kelsey Peters in the bathroom where Kelsey congratulations her on her new job and then proceeds to warn her about how uptight Diana can be. Later that day, Kelsey invites Liza to a Krav Maga class with her and her friend, Lauren. In the locker room, after the Krav Maga class, Liza is changing when Lauren freaks out about Liza's pubic hair.
Liza and Kelsey become quick friends. Kelsey invites Liza to meet her boyfriend, Thad and when Liza's phone interrupts a staff meeting Kelsey comes to her rescue. She encourages Liza to go on a date with Josh and helps her get ready. Liza almost backs out of the date when she gets a call from her daughter but Josh comes outside and asks her where she's going, convincing her to stay.
In "Liza Sows Her Oates," Liza is tasked with marketing an older writer to younger readers, and she agrees to go on a blind date with a man close to her age.
